Cancer is a systemic disease with tumors as a local manifestation of the disease. Once cancer occurs in a person, cancerous cells will be found in the body. Surgical removal of tumors in no way implies that one is cured of cancer. For example, breast cancer can relapse even if the original tumors were removed.Like hypertension and diabetes, cancer is a chronic disease. The disease may take a few years to manifest itself - from its occurrence until the emergence of tumors. In some cases, cancer cells may exist in a stage of ....

Cryosurgery for pancreatic cancer
Size: S / L

Pancreatic cancer is the main cause of cancer-related mortality becoming such a major worldwide public health problem. Long-term survival remains poor with less than 5% of patients alive 5 years after diagnosis (1). The radical surgical resection represents the only chance for cure but unfortunately is possible in only 5-25% of cases; the 5-year survival rates for the most favorable patients who undergo resection and adjuvant therapy do not exceed 29% (2). Most patients present with unresectable pancreatic cancer and 40-45% of them have metastatic disease, mainly hepatic, which carries a median survival of 3 to 6 months.

Patient’s testimonial from Ms Gregersen Gurli

I am 66 years old this year, I lived in Denmark which is located in North Europe, maybe you have known Danish culture through “The Little Mermaid” written by Hans Christian Andersen.

When I was a child, people in my country did not talk about cancer. People are very shy and embarrassed to talk about cancer. We heard a lot about cancer but it was very private for people to talk about their disease and how it was treated. It has changed today. The famous Chinese philosopher Confucius once said that “ I tell you something, you will forget, I show you something, maybe you will remember. But if I involve you, you will be able to act upon and do something about your situation”. When I was diagnosed with cancer I was traveling around in eastern Europe countries working and teaching adults.I had little pain in my stomach and get a X-ray done, and doctor initially thought there was stone in my gallbladder. The doctor thought about a lot of diseases, so I should have an operation and but when they look at the subsequent blood test results, they found that something was wrong. That day I met my doctor who told me that firstly I had a pancreatic cancer, secondly cancer had developed to stage IV meaning I would have a very short time to live. That was in 2007. At first, I got a shock. Am I going to die? Am I going to say goodbye to my two daughters and four grandsons forever? I felt very sad that my youngest grandson was only two years old then, I was so afraid that I would never see him grow up. In Danish hospital, doctors treated me with chemotherapy. I got very sick, vomiting and hair losing, the side effects were so awful that doctors said they could not do chemotherapy for me anymore. When I was on the verge of breakdown, my eldest daughter who went to surf internet saw a Danish doctor sought medical treatment in Guangzhou FUDA Cancer hospital for his daughter’s cancer. I had never heard about Guangzhou at that time though I had been to Beijing. I went on to communicate with Dr Niu Lizhi who explained all the treatment approach to me. I and my daughters realized that my cancer would probably be treatable in FUDA Cancer hospital even though my pancreatic cancer with liver metastasis was so advanced. I sold my house and came to FUDA Cancer hospital for treatment. It would be very new for me to go to China and get medical treatment but I was encouraged by a Danish philosophy “if you go along other people’s footstep, you will never experience something new”. For all the cancer patients you may know, when people get cancer, they get sad, angry, and lost self-control, saying why me? Something is growing inside your body, you don’t know what to do and you loose control in your life.. Today it is the 7th time I had been to FUDA Cancer hospital since April 2008. I had been treated with cryosurgery and combine immunotherapy for cancer (CIC). I am alive now with good appetite but no pain, coming back to FUDA for CIC has become my annual event. I advise newly diagnosed cancer patient to work every day to be healthy. Be friendly to yourself, that means don’t feel guilty because you have cancer, don’t feel that you have done something abnormal, what important now is that asking yourself what you can do to make a balance of your life. You can not always expect your children to take care of you. In Denmark, we organized all the cancer patients together into different groups to motivate each other. It does not matter if you have a big house or something fancy, what matters is your life. Life, good family and good friends are most important in the whole of world. It is important to eat lots of fruits and vegetables, to do regular exercise and have fun. Nowadays, there are many new advanced treatments for cancers, and in near future cancer patients will probably not die because of cancer, but die with cancer. My liver still have a few metastasis sites due to previous pancreatic cancer but they are well under the control, I am enjoying life with my family. My four grandsons have grown up, they are now at the age of 7, 8, 9, 12; they were so excited to see my photos taken in China, saying they want to come to see China as well. Actually I have planned to visit FUDA Cancer hospital next year for my annual CIC, together with my eldest grandson who is keep in seeing Chinese students at his age. To the newly diagnosed cancer patients, I would like to say this to you “Getting cancer is not the end of your life. Today is the FIRST day of the rest of your life. Take care of yourself.
